Addition to Ex-State House - Bell House, 2006-07
This two bedroom weatherboard cottage was already bulging at the seams with two pre-schoolers in the family; the imminent arrival of a teenage boarder made the additional of a third bedroom, another bathroom and more living space essential.
Two bedrooms and a bathroom have been added to the front of the house, with a large North-facing deck off the lounge extending the outdoor living area. The new addition also includes a front door and hallway, providing a clear point of entry for visitors, who must currently enter via the kitchen at the rear of the house.
Incorporating the smaller of the two bedrooms into the existing lounge has provided a lot more space and flexibility, allowing the existing dining area to be transformed into a ‘kids’ zone’ adjacent to the kitchen.
The extension occupies the little-used front lawn, retaining the large, private and safe back yard for children’s play, and allowing flexibility for adding a fourth bedroom if required in future. Water tanks behind the house, required to manage storm water from the new addition, have been designed to retain most of the rain water collected for use in the laundry, garden and toilets.
